{"id":1940,"date":"2025-07-19T09:02:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T09:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fjnetwork.org\/index\/?p=1940"},"modified":"2025-07-19T09:07:44","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T09:07:44","slug":"faith-and-justice-network-celebrates-ecowas-court-ruling-against-sierra-leone-on-fgm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fjnetwork.org\/index\/faith-and-justice-network-celebrates-ecowas-court-ruling-against-sierra-leone-on-fgm\/","title":{"rendered":"Faith and Justice Network Celebrates ECOWAS Court Ruling Against Sierra Leone on FGM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Views: 15<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Landmark Victory for Human Rights, Women\u2019s Dignity, and Justice Across West Africa<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Monrovia, Liberia, July 18, 2025 \u2013 The Faith and Justice Network of the Mano River Basin welcomes and celebrates the historic ruling by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice, which found the Government of Sierra Leone in violation of the rights of women and girls for its failure to ban and prevent female genital mutilation (FGM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bold and unequivocal ruling marks a major human rights victory\u2014not only for the women and girls of Sierra Leone, but for the entire West African region, where FGM remains a widespread form of gender-based violence, often protected by silence, culture, or political expediency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis ruling is a powerful affirmation that culture must never be used as a cover for cruelty,\u201d said Tolbert Thomas Jallah, Jr., Executive Director of the Faith and Justice Network. \u201cThe time has come for governments, faith leaders, and civil society to protect our daughters\u2014not mutilate them in the name of tradition.<br>\u201d The ECOWAS Court ruled that Sierra Leone\u2019s failure to criminalize and prevent FGM violates its obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights, the Maputo Protocol, and other international human rights standards to which Sierra Leone is a party.<br>FGM, which has devastating physical, psychological, and spiritual consequences, is a form of torture and discrimination that has no place in any society rooted in justice, dignity, and equality.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Faith and Justice Network:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>i. Commends the courage of the survivors and human rights organizations who brought the case forward;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ii. Calls on the Government of Sierra Leone to immediately implement the court\u2019s ruling, including a comprehensive ban on FGM, public education campaigns, and victim support mechanisms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>iii. Urges all ECOWAS member states to follow suit and enact clear national legislation to end FGM in all its forms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>iv. Calls upon churches and faith-based institutions to take bold, prophetic stands against FGM, challenging harmful cultural practices with the liberating truth of the Gospel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs people of faith, we must stand with Tamar, not with Amnon. We must be protectors, not enablers. The cry for justice has been heard. Now we must act.\u201d \u2014 Jallah emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision from the regional court must serve as a turning point in West Africa\u2019s collective journey toward gender justice and human dignity. The Faith and Justice Network, in collaboration with its partners across Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, recommits itself to ensuring that no girl\u2019s body is violated,
