Freetown, Sierra Leone, on April 30th, 2021, using inter-religious cooperation for peace, the Faith and Justice Network for the first time brought together fifteen religious clerics from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea to the Secretariat of the Mano River Union for acquaintance and sharing of information visit. The Secretary-General, Her Excellency, Amb. Medina A. Wesseh applauded the regional religious clerics for the courtesy visit aimed to discuss issues relating to the Mano River Basin and their role in promoting peace and security.

The Inter-religious leaders’ courtesy visit is aimed at discussing with the Secretary-General and staff of the MRU Secretariat to create for the first time a unique, dynamic space for the discussion of contemporary issues; migration and tensions placed on human rights, and the complexities that have arisen from COVID-19 global pandemic on social and political environments of the subregion.  Amb. Wesseh therefore, speaking to the religious clerics on behalf of Heads of Authorities of the subregion used the occasion to appeal to the religious leaders to become more effective as change agents for the fight against harmful traditional practices and to support their respective national governments in a joint effort to eliminate the raising gender-based violence in the MRU Basin.

The Faith and Justice Network Regional Executive Director also in the closing remark extended thanks and appreciation to the Secretary-General for her instrumentality and innovation which have led the MRU leaders to reach tremendous success for peaceful coexistence and good neighborliness in the basin. The visiting delegation commended the MRU Secretariat for their support in the fight against the COVID–19 global pandemic and the effort towards the reduction in the proliferation of small and light weapons in the basin.

The visit from the MRU Secretariat was followed by a visit to the Sierra Leone Human Rights Commission to discuss the way forward in the attempt to mitigate harmful traditional practices which also marked the end of the lobby and advocacy engagements in Sierra Leone.
