[Monrovia, October 4th, 2023] Fellow Citizens of Liberia and Foreign Residents,
I, Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Faith and Justice Network (FJN), stand before you today to issue a vital call to all political parties and citizens in Liberia. With the Presidential and Legislative elections scheduled for Tuesday, October 10th, 2023 fast approaching, it is our shared duty to uphold the principles of democracy, integrity, non-violence, and peaceful elections as outlined in the Farmington River Declaration and Pledge.
The Farmington River Declaration and Pledge, established on April 4th, 2023, by twenty-six registered Political Parties in Unification City, Margibi County, Republic of Liberia, embodied the core values of our nation and our commitment to ensuring that our electoral processes are free, fair, and devoid of violence. These principles are the foundation upon which our democracy thrives, and they are crucial in preserving the unity and stability of our beloved Country, Liberia.
As we navigate the intricate path of elections, I implore all political parties and citizens to:
- Uphold Elections Integrity: Commit to fair and transparent electoral processes, free from fraud, bribery, or any form of manipulation. Ensure the sanctity of the voters’ will and the integrity of the electoral system.
- Embrace Non-violence: I call on you to reject violence as a means of political expression. Encourage your supporters to engage in peaceful dialogue and constructive debate. Violence not only harms individuals but threatens the very fabric of our nation.
- Promote Peaceful Elections: I want you to recognize the importance of peaceful elections in building a stable and prosperous Liberia. I plead with you to advocate for calm, respect for opposing views, and cooperation with electoral authorities.
- Respect the Rule of Law: Commit to upholding the rule of law and the decisions of electoral authorities. Seek legal means to address grievances and disputes.
- Ensure Inclusivity: Embrace diversity and inclusivity within your parties, fostering an environment where all voices are heard, and all citizens are represented.
To the citizens of Liberia, I urge you to actively participate in the electoral process with a commitment to non-violence and respect for one another’s choices. Your vote is not just a right but a powerful tool to shape the future of our nation. By exercising your vote responsibly, you contribute to the peace and prosperity of Liberia. Our nation has a rich tradition of peaceful coexistence, and it is paramount that we uphold this legacy during the electoral process. Liberia’s democratic stability hinges upon the fair, non-violent, and respectful conduct of elections.
To the people of faith, we urge you to stand against intimidation and violence, and to uphold the principles of peace, tolerance, and respect for one another. Your engagement in the electoral process is essential, and your voice can bring about positive change in our nation. Let us come together as a united people and reject violence in all its forms.
In the coming days, the Faith and Justice Network, in collaboration with other civil society organizations, will work diligently to monitor the adherence to the Farmington River Declaration and Pledge. We call upon all stakeholders to engage in open dialogue and cooperation to ensure that the principles of integrity, non-violence, and peaceful elections are upheld.
Together, let us reaffirm our commitment to a democratic, peaceful, and united Liberia. May our actions serve as a testament to our dedication to the principles of the Farmington River Declaration.
May God bless Liberia and guide us towards a harmonious and prosperous future.
In service to our beloved nation
Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire, Jr.
