The Faith and Justice Network Condemns Electoral Violence in Liberia
[Monrovia, October 2nd, 2023] – The Faith and Justice Network (FJN) condemns the recent wave of electoral violence that has shaken the foundations of democracy in our region. We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded in Foya, northwestern Lofa county, on Friday, September 29, 2023, when clashes between supporters from both the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the opposition Unity Party (UP) resulted in the loss of innocent lives and the injury of several citizens. This has cast a dark pall over the 2023 presidential and legislative elections scheduled for Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
Our hearts go out to the families affected by this senseless violence, and we offer our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones. We also express our sincere concern and support for the wounded, praying for their swift recovery and healing.
It is equally distressing to note that similar incidents of electoral violence, including the use of live ammunition during campaign rallies, have been reported from Grand Cape Mount and Nimba Counties. Such acts of violence undermine the principles of free and fair elections, threaten the lives of ordinary citizens, and erode the foundations of peaceful coexistence.
As an organization committed to promoting justice, peace, and ethical governance, the Faith and Justice Network of the Mano River Basin Countries calls for the following:
- We urge all political parties and their supporters to remain in the spirit of the Farmington River Declaration, to strongly admonish their partisans to refrain from provocation, exercise restraint, renounce violence, and immediately cease hostilities. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful and that the safety and security of all citizens are protected.
- We call on the relevant authorities to conduct thorough and transparent investigations into the incidents of violence and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. Impunity must not be tolerated.
- We encourage dialogue and reconciliation efforts among political actors to resolve disputes and differences peacefully. Political leaders should demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of the nation by prioritizing unity and collaboration.
- We request international election observers to closely monitor the electoral process in our Liberia to help ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to international standards.
- We emphasize the importance of engaging local communities in promoting peaceful elections. Community leaders, faith-based organizations, and civil society should play a pivotal role in fostering dialogue and resolving conflicts at the grassroots level.
We, the Faith and Justice Network of the Mano River Basin Countries, firmly believe in the power of faith, justice, and unity to overcome challenges and build a brighter future for our region. We stand together with the people of Liberia in our collective pursuit of peace, justice, and democratic values.
In these trying times, let us remember that our shared commitment to a peaceful and just society will ultimately prevail over violence and discord. Together, we can heal wounds, restore trust, and pave the way for a better future for all.
